The focus of this technology workshop page is to spotlight websites that have one or more of the following purposes:

 * Enable students to engage in interactive lessons that explain somewhat confusing mathematical concepts

 * Present students with opportunities to engage in critical thinking strategies to help them solve math problems

 * Discover how math strategies can be applied to activities and careers outside of the classroom

MATH LIVE uses animated characters that act out skits designed to demonstrate a wide variety of mathematical concepts for students.

There are 4 main strands that the lessons are organized into:

  • Number

  • Patterns and Relations

  • Shape and Space

  • Statistics and Probability

The site also has a math terms glossary with interactive features for several of the entries.

ESTIMATION180.co m

This site was created by Andrew Stadel as a way to present his students with an estimation challenge for every school day.  It is designed to help students improve their number sense and problem solving skills.

There is a different estimation problem for each day of the school year, starting with very basic estimation problems, and increasing in difficulty and complexity as the school year progresses.  Each problem features an embedded Google form for participants to fill out and submit.  The problems are designed for students to discuss and come up with reasonable solutions to the question.

You can also open a Google Doc link that shows the guesses and responses that each participant has made over time.

Have your math students ever asked you,

"WHEN ARE WE EVER GOING TO USE THIS?"

GET THE MATH is about algebra in the real world.

See how professionals use math in music, fashion, videogames, restaurants, basketball, and special effects. Then take on interactive challenges related to those careers.  Topics explored on this site include:

  • Math in Music

  • Math in Fashion

  • Math in Video Games

  • Math in Restaurants

  • Math in Basketball

  • Math in Special Effects

Each math spotlight features a challenge for students

to engage in to explore further how math contributes

to that activity or career.

FREE  TIME!

Powerlines is a math activity that requires the user to utilize critical thinking to advance from one level to the next.  For each array, the numbers must be arranged in a way that the total of the numbers in each direction must add up to the power line total shown at the bottom of the screen.  Each level increases in difficulty as you progress.
